One of my spiritual mentors was Gordon Cosby, the founder of The Church of the Saviour in Washington, DC. A consistent emphasis in Gordon’s ministry was lifting up that discerning and following God’s call is a normative Christian experience and is not limited to professional religious vocations. The following quote summarizes that following God’s call for our lives is crucial not only for our lives but also for God’s purpose for all creation – that’s how much God loves us and how important we are to God’s will for our world.

Christ makes each of us something unlike any other creation ever fashioned by God – something wonderful, exciting, unique; something specifically needed in the total Body of Christ…The creation will be forever incomplete without you, without your gift. This is a staggering truth. (from By Grace Transformed pp. 97 and 99)
