In these uncertain and challenging times, each day we hear of more ways that cities, counties, states, and the federal government are taking steps to slow down the spread of the COVID-19 virus. For now “social distancing” and regular hand washing are two major ways that each of us can contribute to slowing down and eventually ending this pandemic. Yet there is another disease that is spreading at the same time, one which the highest levels of our national government is promoting rather than eradicating – the disease of racism. When the President and other administration officials insist on using the term “Chinese virus,” they are not only scientifically inaccurate but also spreading the disease of racism against people from China and others of Asian descent. Reports from around the country tell of verbal and even physical assaults on people of Asian descent by those who ignorantly blame them for the pandemic. The video posted below is painful but important to watch. It shows the impact of using words that fan the flames of racism. However, there is a way to slow down the spread of this disease. Reports from around the world and in each of our local communities tell of loving and selfless acts of service by people committed to end the pandemic medially and to reach out to help the most vulnerable around us until the pandemic is over. Please take time to watch the second video posted below. It is a testimony to the kind of love and service that will ultimately defeat both diseases – COVID 19 and racism.
