My Brother Jesus - Netflix Film Club.jpg

During this Holy Week, I want to share a video called “My Brother Jesus” by Netflix Film Club that tells the story of a painting by that name. It features interviews with the artist Stanley Rayfield and and his friend Steven Conaway who served as the model for the painting. The story is set in Richmond, VA where the painting is exhibited in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Richmond is the scene of ongoing demonstrations for racial justice following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020. This is also the metro area where I moved after 30 years in metro DC. The film is a powerful story about the intersection of art, faith, history, and justice. Stanley and Steven not only discuss what it meant to depict Jesus as a Black man but also engage in conversation about the next painting featuring a depiction of Jesus in light of the events of 2020. What emerges is another powerful image suggestive of Jesus’ resurrection and ascension. I invite you to set aside some time in Holy Week to watch and reflect on this special film. For me it is a reminder of what is at the heart of the ministry of Cornelius Corps, the ongoing journey of faith and justice through the power of God’s nonviolent redemptive love.
