There is also a growing call for another kind of “Ceasefire” in our nation. The mass murder that left 18 innocent people dead in Lewiston, Maine was the most recent of many mass killings at the hands of shooters using military style assault rifles. A ban on these weapons expired in 2004 and there has not been the political will to reinstate the ban despite the increase in mass killings since the ban expired. Those who maintain the “right” to own these deadly weapons generally ignore the fact that they are used in many of the horrific killings that claim many lives at one time. Following the murders in Lewiston, the Democratic Congressman, Jared Golden, who is from Lewiston and represents that district, had a press conference during which he announced a change in his stance on the assault weapons ban. In the past, he opposed the ban citing the “right” to own such weapons for personal protection. He went on to ask for forgiveness from the families of the Lewiston victims and his constituents and to be accountable for his previous position. He pledged to use his remaining time in Congress to work with others to ban these weapons. Congressman Golden set an example of that is commendable and far too rare – being willing to change his thinking and actions to move beyond “thoughts and prayers” to work for this much needed kind of“Ceasefire” in our nation. Please watch the second video posted below to hear Congressman Golden in his own words.
